The Beauty in the Beast- La Soufriere volcano

On the northern side of the beautiful island of St Vincent, stands a magnificent wonder of nature. Known to be one of the many active volcanos that can be found in the Caribbean today, the La Soufriere Volcano stands 4,048 feet above sea level, enveloped by lush green vegetation, scenic views and endemic flora and fauna, including many different varieties of birds such as the national bird of St Vincent and the Grenadines, the Amazona Guildingii, the Whistling Warbler, the House Wren and many more. Other creatures such as lizards, the Red-legged Tree Frog, the Agouti and the Oppossum can be found in surrounding vegetation as well.

This very famous hiking destination is accessible by two locations; the leeward side of the island and the windward side of the island. The most popular route however, is the Rabbacca trail on the windward side, approximately eighty(80) minutes drive from capital Kingstown. The route begins at a paved farm track that takes you inland until it reaches a clearly marked trail head pointing the way to the volcano. From there it is a two (2) hour steady uphill climb to the magnificent spectacle, where breath-taking views of the island and its coasts, await eager explorers.

The last known eruption of the La Soufriere volcano was on the 13th of April 1979, with previous eruptions in 1902, 1812 and 1718. Thousands of people were evacuated in the 1979 eruption but the island suffered no casualties.
